A detailed overview of Type 2 diabetes treatment

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a life-long, progressive disease that cannot be cured competely but can be controlled very efficiently. The most effective type 2 diabetes treatment is to keep your blood sugar and cholesterol level normal with the help of diet and exercise, oral medications, and insulin injections.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes afflicting an estimated 20 million people in the United States alone. It usually develops after the age of 40, although younger people with excess weight are also developing this type rapidly.

How type 2 diabetes affects our body

Diabetes type two is basically a metabolic disorder that affects the way our body processes and uses carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Each of these nutrients is a source of sugar (glucose) that is the basic fuel for the beta cells in the body .

Insulin is necessary for our body to be able to use sugar. Type ii diabetes occurs when either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. These conditions can cause two problems:

  • Starvation of beta cells for energy
  • Eventually, increased blood glucose and cholesterol levels

The fact is, for whatever reason, insulin is not being used efficiently in the body. And that can cause significant, severe complications of diabetes such as heart disease, kidney disease, blindness and loss of limbs through amputation. So, the treatment for diabetes type two is aimed at lowering insulin resistance and increasing function of beta cells .

Types of treatment of diabetes type two:

Even though there is no particular cure for diabetes, by performing moderate physical activity for 30 minutes/day, managing balanced diet, proper treatment and controlling their glucose level, people with diabetes type 2 can live long, healthy, happy lives.

Treatment differs at various stages of the disease condition, but the primary aims of treatment of diabetes type 2 are:

  1. managing blood sugar and cholesterol level
  2. restoring insulin sensitivity
  3. reducing diabetic complications
  4. increasing the quality of life

In its early stages, type 2 diabetes can be controlled by losing weight, eating properly and regular exercising. But in the advanced cases of type 2 diabetes, people subsequently need oral medication, insulin shots along with balanced diet and physical activities to control their diabetes and avoid the disease’s serious complications.

So, there are three types of diabetes type ii treatment:

  1. personal plan to manage diet and exercise
  2. oral medication
  3. insulin shots

The first type of treatment is based upon regular exercise, proper diabetic diet, losing weight, keeping blood sugar level and cholesterol level in control and giving up the smoking habit.

The next step is treatment with oral antidiabetic drugs according to the prescription , as these drugs try to help the body along to utilize the insulin properly. :

  • Sulfonylurea s
  • Biguanides, such as metformin
  • Thiazolidinediones
  • Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, such as Precose┬« and Glyset┬«
  • Prandin (repaglinide) Starlix (nateglinide) and their analogues
  • Exenatide

But if the oral agents fail to provide adequate glycemic control , then a better treatment approach for people with type 2 diabetes is to begin insulin therapy. Most people need at least two insulin shots a day to control excessive blood sugar level. You should take insulin 30 minutes before a meal if you take it alone but if you take any combination of two insulin, then you should take your shot just before you eat.
